Wildcats bulldog Longhorns, 28-24
Once again, The Boise City Wildcats lagged statistically on total yardage, but managed to mark up another win as they defeated the Vega, Texas Longhorns, 28-24 Friday night.
The first Wildcat score came on a safety, just over five minutes into the first quarter.The Wildcat defense caught Longhorn Quarterback Colby Westbrook in the end zone for two points. The ‘Cats kept the Longhorns scoreless throughout the first quarter.
The Longhorns pulled ahead in the second quarter with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Westbrook to Steve Burrus with just over ten minutes left in the quarter; the PAT failed.
The Wildcats roared back scoring 18 unanswered points within the last five minutes of the second quarter.
The first ‘Cat touchdown came on a 45-yard jaunt by Felt's Josh Bass; the run for two failed, Boise City led 8 to 6.
Two minutes later, Bass having regained his wind, ran 76 yards for another score, again an attempt for two failed, Boise City 14, Vega 6.
The third TD of the quarter came as time ran out on the clock with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Wildcat signal caller Chase Loyd to Albert Hernandez; the subsequent kick was blocked and the Wildcats went into the locker room with a 20 to 6 halftime lead.
The Longhorns came out of the half with a stiffened defense and held the ‘Cats scoreless in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, the Longhorn offense scored two third-quarter touchdowns on runs of three and 83 yards by Brandon Gruhlkey, both PATs failed and the Wildcats went into the fourth quarter holding on to a 20 to 18 lead.
With 3:53 left on the game clock, the Wildcats Hernandez squirted into the end zone from four yards out; Tyler Baird pulled down a Chase Loyd pass for two more as the Wildcats padded their lead to 28-18.
The Longhorns scored their last TD on a three yard Justin O'Brien pass to Gruhkly with 35 seconds left on the clock. The attempt for two failed and the weary Wildcats walked away with their second victory of the 2004-05 season.
The Wildcats outgained the Longhorns on the ground 242 yards to 238; however, the Longhorns passing game, ten completions from 15 attempts with one interception, racked up 126 yards in the air.
In comparison, the Wildcats gathered up 50 yards with two completions out of eight attempts with no interceptions.
The Longhorns had 364 total yards to the Wildcats 292.
The Wildcats had four penalties for a total of 35 yards, the Longhorns six for 48 yards.
