Sheriff warns of phone scam

Cimarron County Sheriff Keith Borth advises that scammers have been on the phone and busy in Cimarron County .

According to Borth, the scammers have been calling individuals and trying to obtain their bank account numbers.

“I've had one woman call me and complain,” Borth said. “As I understand it, there have been more that contacted their banks complaining,” he added.

A check with the Keyes and Boise City banks indicate that at least six women, most of them widowed, have been contacted. The scammers tell the women that Internet problems have been discovered with their bank accounts, and that they need to give the caller their account numbers so the problem can be fixed.

Borth and the bank officials all emphasize that no information should be given over the phone. Any account problems that are legitimate can and will be handled locally and in person with individuals you know.

The representative(s) of each bank also wanted to reassure their account customers that their accounts are safe and secure.
