Billy Burns of Yarbrough is OSSBA president
Eva- Yarbrough School Board Member Billy Burns has dedicated his life to public education. A life-long teacher and a member of his local school board since 1973, Burns will now fulfill this life of service as 2005 President of the Oklahoma State School Boards Association. He assumed the office at the close of the OSSBA Delegate Assembly on Saturday, November 6, 2004, at the Waterford Marriott Hotel in Oklahoma City.
“This is the moment I have dreamed of since I began school board service,” Burns said. “It is a great honor and I thank the school board members of Oklahoma for their trust in my leadership.” Burns' wife and daughters Jody and Kim were present as he took the gavel.
Burns retired from teaching math and science in the Elkhart, Kansas, school district after 32 years. He currently teaches at Rolla, Kansas, which is 17 miles from Elkhart, and is also a farmer. He was elected to the OSSBA Board of Directors for District 1 in 1994, has achieved the highest level of the OSSBA School Board Academy and was a member of the 1999 OSSBA All-State School Board. His community service includes serving as president of his church board for 15 years, vice president of his church camp's executive council for 10 years and as secretary for 20 prior years. His Elkhart FFA chapter named him Chapter Helper in 1998.
Burns and his wife, Janet, have four adult children: Jody, Kim, Billy Don and Kristi. They also have six granddaughters, DaKota, Alexia, Kourtney, Kambry, Kayedence and Natalie.
“Billy has over 30 years of school board service, not to mention his long career as a teacher,” said OSSBA Executive Director Dr. Keith Ballard. “I look forward to watching him fulfill his mission by putting this knowledge and experience to work for our children.”
