A collision on Monday morning took the lives of a rural Cimarron County mother and her one-year-old child.

According to an accident report filed by OHP Trooper Grant Arnold, the accident occured at 9:30 a.m., six- tenths of a mile northwest of Guymon on U.S. Highway 64.

According to Grant's report, the highway was obscured by fog and was wet as a result of the fog. Laura Elizabeth Edge, 26, with her son, Matthew David Rutledge, age one as a passenger, was eastbound, when for reasons unknown, her 1996Chevrolet Monte Carlo left the roadway, was overcorrected and entered the westbound lane in a broadside skid.

The Edge car was then impacted in the passenger side rear quarter panel by a westbound 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Douglas Keith Artho, 43, of Guymon.

The car came to rest in the ditch on the northside of the highway, the truck contined to the northside of the highway and went into a field.

The mother and child, both of whom were belted and restrained were declared dead at the scene; Artho was not injured.

Guymon's Police Department, Fire and E.M.S. along with the Texas County Sheriff's Department, all responded to the accident.
